The Government has set ambitious targets for UK businesses to adopt more sustainable waste management techniques and minimise waste generated. New legislation will be the catalyst for reaching these targets so companies need to be aware of what their legal responsibilities are and the implications if these laws are not followed.
All waste produced by business or within the workplace is regulated by waste laws.
All businesses have a legal responsibility to ensure that waste is managed so as the environment is not harmed. This process is called “Duty of Care” this includes how waste is:
• Produced,
• Stored
• Transported
• Disposed of.
All businesses producing any kind of controlled waste must comply with the duty of care. Most types of business waste are classed as controlled waste including household, commercial and industrial waste. Examples of business waste include but are not limited to:
• Waste paper
• Packaging (plastic, cardboard)
• Substandard or defective products
• Scrap metal
• Wood.
